THE RIVER Loco Klub, Bristol

Set & Costume Design

'April Dalton’s set design is beautiful. Perfectly fitting in Loco Klub’s cavernous venue, the set is sparse and elegant, evoking the feel of seclusion, of being surrounded by water.....For me, the standout is that set, which is one of the most innovative I’ve seen; it creates a haunting and beautiful effect that really stuck with me'- Weston-Super-Mum

Concept: The design of  'The River' combined ideas of creating the sense of a cabin suspended above water and a more abstract space that reflected the internal struggle of the central male character. I felt it was also important to echo the wonderful shape of our site specific venue. I wanted to trap him and create an intense space where confrontations seemed inescapable. The delicate canopy both allowed us to surround him while reflecting his fragile and fragmented state of mind where events seem to repeat, overlap, break suddenly. Acrylic plinths of water surrounded the raised platform to add a suggestion of water in a more contained and controlled sense.
